Background and credentials

Julia L F Goldstein became fascinated with materials like metals and plastics in college when she took an introduction to materials science course at Harvey Mudd College. After earning her BS in general engineering, she continued to graduate school. She holds an MS in materials science from Stanford University and a PhD in materials science from UC Berkeley.

Julia began her career as an engineer and migrated to journalism in the early 2000s, writing for a trade publication in the electronics industry. She has published articles in multiple specialty trade and business journals. Her first book, Material Value: More Sustainable, Less Wasteful Manufacturing of Everything from Cell Phones to Cleaning Products, was a finalist in the 2019 San Francisco Writers Conference and a semifinalist for the 2020 Nonfiction Booklife Prize. Rethink the Bins: Your Guide to Smart Recycling and Less Household Waste earned a Gold award from the Nonfiction Authors Association.
